SUMMARY:The centennial calendar - a historical weather forecast from the Cistercian order
DESCRIPTION:The centennial calendar is a compilation of weather forecasts. It was compiled in the 17th century by Cistercian abbot Mauritius Knauer (* 1613 or 1614; † 1664). It was intended to enable him and his monks to predict the weather and thus optimize monastic agriculture. Although the hundred-year calendar does not provide a reliable weather forecast\, it is an interesting example of historical weather forecasts and the ideas of the time about the influence of celestial bodies on the weather. The calendar is still updated today and printed in various farmers’ calendars\, although modern meteorology sees no scientific basis for the predictions. \nIn the lecture\, EKS project manager Martina Zanner first presents the centenary calendar by Abbot Mauritius Knauer. The project manager of the eco-model region\, Antje Grüner\, will then discuss the significance of the calendar for organic agriculture. \nLocation: Tirschenreuth District Office\, large conference room

SUMMARY:Course: Construction and reconstruction of a dry stone wall
DESCRIPTION:Stone by stone – Workshop: Construction and reconstruction of a dry stone wall \nDry stone walls have been a defining element of our cultural landscape for centuries. Especially on steep slopes where vines are grown. They are not only functional\, but also a piece of living history. The Maulbronn monastery vineyard is an outstanding example of these walls built from reed sandstone. It was partly laid out in the Middle Ages and is now used as a vineyard again to the west. \nWhat makes dry stone walls so special?\n✓ Pure craftsmanship – with traditional know-how\n✓ Naturally built – with stones from the region\n✓ Durable and stable – as they are also frost-resistant\n✓ Slope stabilization – they keep the humus in the terraces\n✓ Heat storage – during the day they store sun\, at night they give off heat\n✓ Increased biodiversity – ecologically valuable habitat for plants and animals\n✓ Local recreational value – landscape experience and unique views during walks \nBut nature leaves its mark: dry stone walls are exposed to the elements and need to be regularly maintained or rebuilt in damaged areas. \nExperience the art of dry stone walling up close \nIn our workshop\, participants learn the art of dry stone wall building: from the basics of stone working to expert instruction on how to build and reconstruct a vineyard dry stone wall. \nMore detailed information on the program\, the venues and the participation fee can be found at the following link: \nDrywalls_Flyer.indd

The overture to “The Italian in Algiers” is a sparkling masterpiece full of wit\, rhythmic energy and dramatic surprises – a prime example of Rossini’s brilliant operatic artistry. Beethoven’s violin concerto – famous for its wonderful melodies and balanced form – is one of the most frequently performed works in music history. The internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Jan Mráček\, concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra\, promises an extraordinary listening experience in the magnificent Kaisersaal of Ebrach Monastery – a room whose dimensions correspond to those of Beethoven’s time. The music of the great Viennese classical composer unfolds its full effect here\, not only visually but also acoustically. In the second part of the evening\, you can expect Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony\, which was celebrated by none other than Richard Wagner as the “apotheosis of dance”. A sparkling\, symphonic-dance prelude to a summer full of music in the heart of Franconia!
