As part of the current LEADER TNC III collaboration, the International Landscape Symposium took place on September 10 and 11, 2026, at the Cisterscapes monastic landscape in Velehrad, Moravia. Scholars and experts from Austria, Germany, Poland, Portugal, and the Czech Republic presented their research findings on the topic “Discontinuities and Continuities in the Development of the Cultural Landscape” using local examples. The aim was, on the one hand, to highlight the reasons for striking breaks, but also to explore ways in which the cultural landscape heritage has been—and continues to be—revalued, both in the past and today. Particularly fascinating were the comparisons between the landscape shaping practices of the Cistercians and those of the Benedictines and Premonstratensians. Many parallels were evident here, although the Cistercian landscape not only exhibits the greatest diversity of elements to this day but also—and this is its unique selling point—represents a clearly recognizable type of landscape that extends across all of Europe. The approximately 50 participants from seven countries, including partners from 11 Cisterscapes sites, were naturally also able to experience the cultural landscape of Velehrad during a half-day excursion guided by experts. This climatically blessed, hilly region, dotted with numerous fruit trees and vineyards, rightly bears the nickname “Moravian Tuscany,” which is why a visit to local winemakers was, of course, also on the program. Overall, the conference was a great success, particularly in terms of strengthening cooperation within the network and with other European partners.
