In 2025, work began on the extension of the Regional Museum building in Wągrowiec. This is the second phase of the project, which received financial support from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Fund for the Promotion of Culture and from the budget of the Municipality of Wągrowiec as part of the government’s “Cultural Infrastructure” program.
As part of the approved funding, the technical documentation required to implement the project was drawn up and preparatory work began. However, the earthworks were interrupted when the remains of old masonry were discovered. The archaeological investigations carried out also uncovered numerous historical finds, including fragments of ceramic vessels, tiles, animal bones and coins.
At the current state of the investigations, it can be assumed that the relics discovered are the remains of a medieval Cistercian abbot’s residence, including later phases of conversion dating to the modern era.
Due to the high scientific and historical value of the find, the Voivodeship Office for the Protection of Monuments decided to secure the uncovered remains of the wall for the winter in order to prevent them from decaying. Due to the circumstances, the construction works related to the extension of the museum were suspended. Archaeological and architectural investigations are scheduled to resume in the spring.
Although the need to temporarily suspend the investment represents an organizational and planning challenge, it also opens up new perspectives for the development of the regional museum. The possibility of exhibiting the preserved architectural relics in future and making them accessible to visitors is being considered and discussed. Such a solution could enrich the museum’s offer, increase its scientific and educational status and make it an even more attractive place on the tourist map of Wielkopolska.
The project entitled “Extension and reconstruction of the building of the Regional Museum in Wągrowiec – preparatory works and preparation of technical documentation for the second phase” is co-financed under the government program “Infrastructure of Culture” from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Fund for the Promotion of Culture and from the budget of the Municipality of Wągrowiec.
