Over three summers 800 years ago, up to a hundred farmers from the Waldsassen monastery toiled daily at the sawmill to cut an artificial channel through the local granite and gneiss for the Waldnaab. Using a hammer and chisel, without black powder or other technical equipment, around 500 cubic meters of stone were broken out
