Stone by stone – Course: Construction and reconstruction of a dry stone wall

Dry stone walls have been a defining element of our cultural landscape for centuries. Especially on steep slopes where vines are grown. They are not only functional, but also a piece of living history. The Maulbronn monastery vineyard is an outstanding example of these walls built from reed sandstone. It was partly laid out in the Middle Ages and is now used as a vineyard again to the west.

What makes dry stone walls so special?
Pure craftsmanship – with traditional know-how
Naturally built – with stones from the region
Durable and stable – as they are also frost-resistant
Slope stabilization – they keep the humus in the terraces
Heat storage – during the day they store sun, at night they give off heat
Increased biodiversity – ecologically valuable habitat for plants and animals
Local recreational value – landscape experience and unique views during walks

But nature leaves its mark: dry stone walls are exposed to the elements and need to be regularly maintained or rebuilt in damaged areas.

Experience the art of dry stone walling up close
