  • The centennial calendar – a historical weather forecast from the Cistercian order

The centennial calendar is a compilation of weather forecasts. It was compiled in the 17th century by Cistercian abbot Mauritius Knauer (* 1613 or 1614; † 1664). It was intended to enable him and his monks to predict the weather and thus optimize monastic agriculture. Although the hundred-year calendar does not provide a reliable weather forecast, it is an interesting example of historical weather forecasts and the ideas of the time about the influence of celestial bodies on the weather. The calendar is still updated today and printed in various farmers' calendars, although modern meteorology sees no scientific basis for the predictions. In the lecture, EKS project manager Martina Zanner first presents the centenary calendar by Abbot Mauritius Knauer. The project manager of the eco-model region, Antje Grüner, will then discuss the significance of the calendar for organic agriculture. Location: Tirschenreuth District Office, large conference room
