A warm invitation to the grand opening of the Cisterscapes Visitor Center in the Old Town Hall. Explore the new exhibition on June 25, 2026 and enjoy regional specialties from the monastery landscape.

The monastery landscape of the Cistercians of Zwettl is one of the best-preserved examples of a monastery landscape in the whole of Europe. Characteristic elements such as granges (farmyards) and ponds still shape its appearance today.
Some Cistercian monastic landscapes have been awarded the European Heritage Label since April 2024.
The Cisterscapes project partners Vyšší Brod in South Bohemia, Zwettl in the Waldviertel and Žďár nad Sázavou in the Visočina region are working particularly closely together as part of the Interreg project “ATCZ00007 – CISTERSCAPES VB-Zw-ZnS”.
Visitor centers are being built at all four project locations, which will provide information about the international Cisterscapes project, the European Heritage Label, the Cistercian monastery landscapes and the four Interreg partners and their cooperation.
The exhibition at the Zwettl visitor center is dedicated to the traces left by the Cistercian monks in the monastery landscape. The focus is also on regional products such as carp, beer and poppy seeds as well as Waldviertel pond farming.

Program:
5.00 pm: Opening ceremony in the passage of the Old Town Hall, speeches with musical accompaniment and agape
6.00 pm: Guided tour with the curators through the exhibition in the new visitor center

Accompanying activities:

  • Round trip in the carp carriage
  • “Fishing up close – right in the middle instead of just being there” – experience with VR glasses
  • Activity stations with puzzles, games and escape

This project is funded by the Interreg Austria-Czech Republic program under the project title “ATCZ00007 CISTERSCAPES VB-Zw-ZnS”.
